Dark Mode Hype

Dark Mode Hype

When the Calgary Flames wear Blasty, the entire team’s branding shifts to Dark Mode, and I had the opportunity to create content to support the takeover.

I envisioned transforming the Flames’ red jersey into the Blasty third jersey. Using After Effects along with video and photo assets, I removed the striping and logos, replacing them with the black jersey. For the floating jersey effect, Matthew Hipple helped by wearing a green screen suit. It took a lot of rotoscoping and rebuilding the jersey back into the scene.

We filmed machinery, computer consoles, and other gadgets in our control room to pay tribute to Star Wars, which used a switcher console as part of the Death Star control center set in the original film. Special thanks to Ed Robertson for the fun history fact and for providing the voice-over heard at the start of the video.

These assets were featured in an opening video that plays before the team hits the ice and in the “Blasty Blackout” marketing campaign you see here. If you haven’t experienced it live, be sure to grab tickets for tonight’s Blasty Blackout game, our last Dark Mode event of the year.

A big thank you to Geordie Macleod, Austin Shaw, Riley Jans, Luca Cioffi, Ed Robertson, Matthew Hipple, Carlo Petrini, and Peter Stewart for their support, direction, and guidance.
