London + X100VI
158,040 steps through London and just under 1,000 photos taken. I have compiled my favourite shots from my wife and my week-long trip to the United Kingdom.
All photos were shot using my X100VI, with all images captured using only two in-camera recipes, cropping, minor exposure adjustments, and in some cases, the AI removal tool in Lightroom Mobile to clean things up when needed. Throughout the trip, I only used two recipes. The black-and-white one is a custom BKW, and the colour one is the popular Classic Cuban recipe. A Glimmer Glass filter was used to create a soft, blooming effect.
I absolutely love shooting in-camera JPGs with custom recipes. Having the limitations of a JPG makes it feel like film, and I find myself slowing down and thinking about the shot and settings more. I always make sure to shoot RAW + JPG so you can readjust images as needed with the RAW Conversion feature in-camera.
On the last trip, I used the X100V, and for this trip, I upgraded to the VI. I would say the upgrade was well worth it, as the image stabilization came in clutch, and the 40MP images are larger when using the in-camera telephoto feature, which I used often.
Coming from Canon’s full-frame flagship models, I do wish there was a bit more separation, and I often find myself noticing the crop sensor. Don’t get me wrong—the camera produces beautiful images, but there’s something special about a full-frame image. That said, the custom analog dials and compact footprint of the camera are huge wins. It will be interesting to see what Fuji does with the GFX100RF and how medium format performs in a body this small. My dream camera would be a full-frame 35mm f/1.4 that’s a similar size to the X100 series. I adore Fuji and wish Canon would take more inspiration from them.
Battery life was better than I expected, as I tested it a few months ago and noticed how bad it was. I could make it almost a full day just shooting stills. I had a battery bank I used to top up when grabbing some food.
My wife and I did a trilogy of the biggest cities as we love to explore urban areas. New York, Tokyo/Japan, and now London capped it off. London is an amazing city that has so much to offer. It stood out from the others, as there is always life within the streets even late at night, the transit (London Tube) is incredible, and the history is magical. We are both big fans of Netflix’s The Crown, so it was cool to check out all the lore. The weather was a bit chilly, but nothing compared to our home in Calgary.
