VHS Moments

VHS Moments

This was created for last night's Calgary Flames 80s Night. For some time, I had an idea of shooting a promo during a game with an old VHS camera and finally had the time and resources to make it happen.

I was pretty set on using my family's old VHS camera but could not get it working. I did, however, finally find my old DV camera and a bunch of tapes. I shot countless hours of my youth with the camera so the nostalgia was hard to handle at times; so many good memories! I bought a capture card and some new batteries on Amazon and was ready to go.

Sixteen-year-old me would have his mind blown seeing my future self capture content at the "dream job". Truly blessed to have the opportunity and good people around me to let me try these crazy ideas. I had to capture the video and edit it within about two hours. I had minor hiccups throughout but nothing to derail the project. The footage looks even worse because I had something go wrong with the codec from OBS. Funny, as I thought the DV cam would look too good and not be authentic to VHS; guess that's the universe working its magic. Still not sure what caused the bad codec, but it was fine again later that night when I got home. All my test captures were flawless.

I hope everyone gets a kick out of this footage; I personally think it's pretty cool seeing the old footage paired with current day. It creates some kind of voodoo feel-good nostalgia. Featured below is an uncut version of the footage I captured from the day. It gives me old home movies vibes so I had to include it.
