Country Roads + 35mm Film

Country Roads + 35mm Film

A good friend of mine, Gerry Thomas, gave me two expired rolls of Fuji Velvia 50. He mentioned that they had been sitting in his Jeep glovebox since the early 2000s.

I took out my Canon 650 and went for a drive on a beautiful summer day in Wheatland County, Alberta. I spent the afternoon capturing landscapes of farmland and taking shots of some truly captivating cloud formations.

I felt a bit anxious, unsure if the film would turn out well due to the conditions it had been stored in. After sending it off for development and waiting for a month, the results finally arrived. I was filled with relief as I saw that the roll had worked out, and taken back by the remarkable vibrancy of the colors. Up until that point, I had only shot C41, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I still have one more roll tucked away, waiting for another special day to bring it out.

I had the great pleasure of giving a few of these prints to family members who used to live near the landmarks I photographed. When I explained that the photos were taken using film, they were amazed that people still work with this medium.

Thank you @gerrythomas_photo for the brilliant film! 🙏🏻 Watch the YouTube short here.
